Non-rigid transformations

We have explored several transformations that maintain lengths and angle measures. Some transformations do not result in an image that is congruent to the original. These transformations are not rigid motions.

Click on each non-rigid motion to see an example.

A figure can be stretched horizontally or vertically. Here we see triangle ABC stretched horizontally by a factor of 2.
A figure can be shrunk horizontally or vertically. Here we see quadrilateral ABCD shrunk vertically by a factor of 3.
A dilation is stretching or shrinking in all directions by the same factor. Here we see polygon ABCD dilated by a factor of 2.
